Memory Care & Dementia
Cognitive-communication support for people living with dementia and the families who care for them.
A dementia diagnosis doesn't have to mean an immediate loss of connection. Speech-language pathology offers tools, routines, and communication strategies that protect quality of life for the person living with dementia and the people around them. Care here is as much about caregivers as it is about the client.
What it is
Speech therapy in memory care focuses on cognitive-communication: memory support strategies, attention, problem-solving, executive function, and the social skills that keep someone connected. For mild and moderate stages, direct skill work matters. For later stages, the focus shifts to environmental adaptation, communication strategies, and coaching the caregiver.
Who this is for
- People with early-stage Alzheimer's, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, or frontotemporal dementia
- Family members who want concrete strategies for daily communication
- Caregivers feeling burned out by the same conversations on repeat
- Anyone whose neurologist or PCP has recommended cognitive-communication support
How I approach this work
My experience with memory care spans skilled nursing facilities, assisted living communities with dedicated memory units, and hospice settings. That breadth shapes how I approach this work: meeting people at the stage they're in, building on strengths that remain, and equipping the family with the strategies that protect daily quality of life.
What sessions look like
Session cadence and structure mirrors what I do with Parkinson's clients. Typically 2–3 sessions per week of 30 minutes, calibrated to need and tolerance. We work on memory strategies, attention, communication routines, and tasks tied to the client's actual life. Caregivers are often part of the work.
- Personalized plan from session one
- Practice strategies for daily life
- Caregiver / family coaching as needed
- Honest progress check-ins
